What We Do

CASA volunteers are
Court Appointed Special Advocates

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) or guardian ad litem (GAL) volunteers are local people from all walks of life. After comprehensive training, volunteers advocate for a child’s best interest in court. These are local children who experience abuse and neglect. Many are in the foster care system.

Volunteers work with legal and child welfare professionals, educators and service providers to make sure judges have the information they need to make the most well-informed decisions for each child.

Mahoning County CASA volunteers are community members who have been rigorously screened and trained. CASA volunteers must:

  • Be at least 21-years-old

  • Pass a background check

  • Complete at least 30 hours of pre-service training, plus in-court observation

  • Accumulate 12 hours of continuing education every year

Volunteers get continued support from the Mahoning County CASA team.

Who We Are

  • Mahoning County CASA Executive Director

Cathy's transformative journey unfolded in 2017 when she became the Executive Director, a pinnacle reached after four years as the Assistant Director and one year as a volunteer advocate. Cathy navigated the challenges and joys of raising four boys alongside her husband of 28 years, who have since grown into adults.

Her journey into public service was seeded during her years as a stay-at-home mom when she committed herself to volunteering at various non-profits, with CASA holding a special place in her heart. Engaging deeply with her community, she's an integral part of Old North Church, and her influence extends as a former mentor mom supporting young mothers. Cathy's commitment to making a global impact is underscored by her participation in three international mission trips to Ukraine. On these missions, she not only managed children's camps but also contributed as an EMT to women's health screenings. Cathy holds a Paralegal degree, Paralegal certificate, EMT license, and Tax certification, showcasing the breadth of her expertise.

To remain at the forefront of child advocacy, Cathy diligently stays informed about foster care trends and legal changes affecting abused and neglected children in Mahoning County. Her proactive approach includes regular attendance at Ohio CASA directors' meetings and the annual Ohio CASA conference in Columbus. Certified in trauma-informed care, Cathy is not just a local advocate; she's a valued member of both the Ohio CASA Organization and National CASA.

Beyond her profound commitment to children, Cathy's compassionate heart extends to animals, revealing a softer side that complements her fierce dedication to advocacy. In her, the children and animals of Mahoning County find a tireless champion on their side.
